Max is sitting in his room at home, Thor on his shoulder, watching a kid's TV program.  "Go, Cyber-Sam!" he exclaims, punching the air. Then Max does a double-take at the TV screen; Virgil's head emerges from the shoulders of Cyber-Sam. He tells Max to hurry to the local car wash; another mission for Max!

Max is met by Virgil at other the other end of the portal.  He is about to ask what is going on when he notices Norman nearby, head butting a large tree.  Virgil informs him that Norman is preparing for battle but Max is puzzled; isn't he always preparing for battle?  but not in this manner. Another portal ride and the three of them find themselves in Greece.  Virgil continues to explain that in order for Norman to live another ten thousand years he must face an ancient best known as 'The Conqueror in a contest known as the three conquests of courage, and he must do so by sun-down or he will seize to exist.'   Max is not perturbed and tells Norman not to worry, he will help him.  Max is puzzled when Norman tells him that he cannot accompany him on this quest. It dawns on Max that this time Virgil and Norman had only wanted his presence in order to allow them to travel via the portals to the site of the contest.  Max is about to protest when Virgil roughly shoves him backward causing Max to fall through a portal that has opened up behind him. Max finds himself in Australia, without Virgil's portal map to help him find his way back to them.

Meanwhile, Norman prepares for the first challenge:  to drink from the cup of Apollo.  Norman soon finds himself in battle as The Conqueror lets out a roar and attacks him from nowhere.

Max, lost in Australia, is feeling pretty pleased with himself as he has quickly located another portal.  Laughing to himself he leaps through the portal only to find himself in another barren land, this time Mexico.  With a herd of stampeding cattle charging towards him and only just manages to leap out of the way.

Norman, still fighting The Conqueror, spies the cup of Apollo.  He rushes towards it but The Conqueror knocks him out of the way.  Virgil desperately calls out to Norman, trying to give him instructions to win.

Max escapes the stampeding herd by hiding up a tree but has miscalculated his leap to freedom, and ends up on the back of one of the cattle. Out of the frying pan and into the fire:  Max ends up in a sea, being chased by a man-eating shark. As the gaping jaws of the shark snap shut Max finds himself on the back of a passing dolphin.

Norman makes a dash for the cup of Apollo and quickly drinks from it.  It seems to give him a much needed boost and he picks up a stone pillar and hurls it at The Conqueror, flattening him.  Norman roars in triumph as he wins the first contest.

The dolphin dives into the depths of the sea with Max still clutching on to it, holding his breath for his life.  Just as all seems lost Max sees a portal open up on the sea bed in front of him.  He lets go of the dolphin and swims through it.

Norman once again must fight The Conqueror as he starts the second contest.  This time The Conqueror has a staff of fire and Norman quickly loses his sword.  He must find a weapon that will allow him to best the staff of fire.  It doesn't take long for him to find it; the Bellows of the gods. Using it he puts out the staff of fire, much to the surprise of The Conqueror.

Max finds himself in what appears to be a deserted town.  As he wanders around he spies a couple of people standing outside a store.  He approaches them to ask them where he is but they ignore him.  Are they being rude?  Don't they like him?  But Max soon realises that these are not people, but what look like dummies.  Max is first puzzled, then horrified when he sees a signpost across the road: Danger! Ground Zero Nuclear Test Zone.  Keep Out! - Max is in a nuclear testing site! He looks up into the sky and sees a fighter jet screaming towards him which then releases a bomb.  Max only just escapes with is life as he stumbles into a portal as the nuclear bomb detonates.

Norman faces The Conqueror one last time but now its has two huge hammers which, when struck on the ground, produces huge earthquakes. Norman swings his sword at The Conqueror but is dismayed when his sword hits one of the hammers, broking his sword in two!

Max finds himself outside the car wash again. He jumps back through the portal to Greece and finds himself in the middle of the final battle between Norman and The Conqueror.  Max sees that Norman has lost his sword and in an attempt to help his friend out, Max offers himself as the weapon. However, it is not the physical Max that is used as the weapon, but his cunning.  Using a simple plan Max trips The Conqueror causing him to drop the two hammers.  They land at Norman's feet who immediately picks them up and smashes them onto the ground.  The Conqueror cries out in defeat as the ground opens up and swallows him.  Norman has won and lives another ten thousand years.

But not all is over.  The Conqueror emerges from the ground but Norman is excited.  "Second Innings!" he smiles.  His smile is not long lived as The Conqueror greets him in a friendly manner, thanking the three of them.  He explains that he had been destined to fight for all eternity until one had defeated him.  Now at long last he could rejoin humanity once again.
