SOULS OF TALON
This is the 24th episode in the entire series of Mighty Max, being the 11th program of series 2. In this one we visit the astral plane in which a huge eagle carrying a large skull in its feet lands before the gateway to earth. The skull's eyes light up and calls out to the gatekeeper. A huge disembodied eye appears above the gateway but refuses to allow the skull (Talon) to pass through; Only one that beareth the cap of the Mighty One shall pass through! he states. Talon is enraged and orders the eagle to attack the gate. A hole is made in the gate but not big enough for Talon to pass. Episode Captures (Click to enlarge) Max has an emergency; he has no batteries for his calculator! How is he going to do his homework without one? He's not going to have to do it the hard way is he? He has an idea, perhaps his mom has some stashed away in her cupboard. Max searches the cupboard and finds not batteries but a brightly wrapped box with "To Max" written on it. It's his birthday soon, could this be a present from his mom? As loveable as Max is he can be a bit naughty at times, and this is one of those times; he reasons that if he opens the present then his mom will have to get him another one. Eagerly he rips of the wrapping paper and opens the box to find.....a Virgil doll? On the back of the doll Max spies a pullstring which he duly pulls. Virgil's voice instructs Max to make his way to the nearby archery range, and adds; and next time wait until your birthday before you open your presents! Max makes his way to the archery range and decides to walk in front of the targets, not realising that a blindfolded archer is about to fire an arrow at the target he is standing in front of. Max staggers back in shock and is swallowed up by a portal that his cap has activated, and just in time too; as the portal closes an arrow thuds into the target right where Max was standing a moment before. Max re-appears in Gibraltar where he meets Norman and Virgil. He is told by Virgil that a breach in the astral plane has created a series of natural disasters on the Earth. Their mission is to close that breach. Just as Virgil finishes explaining this to Max, Norman shouts "Tidal wave!"; sure enough a huge wave is bearing down on the Rock. One portal jump later and the team arrive at a dark desolated ruin where Max sees a beam of greenish light emanating from a crack in a stone wall, the gateway to the astral plane. He goes to take a closer look but is stopped by Norman and advised not to go too near. Max is disappointed; isn't the astral plane that happening, new age place where you can fly and be invisible like a ghost? Max shows his naughty side again by sticking his foot into the portal, and suddenly he disappears to the horror of Virgil and Norman. Max flies over a weird, colourful landscape and laughs as he dives and rolls through the sky. This is great! Is it a bird? Is it the Hubble telescope? No, it's Mighty Max! But his fun does not last long; he suddenly finds himself being chased by a huge eagle like bird that is carrying a massive skull in its claws. The skull calls out menacingly to him, commanding him back, demanding his cap. Max dives into a tunnel which looks like something in the movie "Journey to the Centre of the Earth." Fortunately Talon and his eagle are to big to fit into the tunnel and they fly off to find another way in. Max, looking for another way out, stumbles onto what looks like a heap of treasure in which there are jewels and riches beyond his imagination, but rather than taking them he picks up a disk and puts it in his pocket; well there's nobody around so he can't belong to anybody, can it? He approaches the wall of the tunnel and opens up a gap in it. On the other side he sees to fiendish looking creatures who immediately fly out after him. Max in desperation races to the entrance of the tunnel he flew down and hides around the corner. Luckily the two creatures fly right past Max and off into the sky. Max flies off in the opposite direction but soon finds Talon, but this time without his giant eagle. He gingerly approaches Talon who appears to be silent, but deciding not to get too close he flies off, but a strange noise halts him. It sounds like tormented people calling out to him for help, and they seem to be coming from Talon. Max flies up to Talon and peers into one of his eye sockets and sees within one of the crystal orbs the tortured souls of thousands of people, all crying out for release. Max spins round as he hears a loud screech and sees Talon's eagle screaming out of the sky toward him. Max dashes off as the eagle picks up Talon and races after him. This time Max cannot hide and the eagle is too fast for him. It approaches and with a quick motion from its beak it snatches Max's cap. Talon screams in triumph and is not bothered in the slightest when he sees Virgil and Norman (who have reaches Max via astral projection) floating ahead of him. He mocks Norman by telling him that his puny sword has no effect in this, Talon's, domain, and as if to confirm that fact Norman's sword passes right through Talon with no effect whatsoever. Talon flies off into the sky and reaches the gateway to the earth. He shows the Gatekeeper the cap, and the gates open, allowing Talon to pass through. Virgil tells Norman to return to his body at once to protect the prone bodies of himself and Norman. Max and Virgil reach the gateway shortly afterward but the Gatekeeper refuses to allow them passage as Max does not have his cap with him. Max gets frustrated as Virgil tries to get the Gatekeeper to allow them through. Max then tries to reason with the Gatekeeper, pointing out that he cannot show the Gatekeeper his cap and he, the Gatekeeper, has it in his possession after having taken it from Talon. The Gatekeeper thinks for a moment and then, realising that Max is speaking the truth, lets them pass. They re-appear at the desolated ruins where they find a battered looking Norman, who has obviously fought talon and lost. Virgil tells them that there is no way they can best Talon now as he is immortal, only the disk of immortality can help them now, and that is buried somewhere in the astral plane. Max reaches into his pocket and pulls out the disk he picked up earlier. "Is this it?" Virgil leaps for joy when he sees the disk, yes, now they can track down Talon and defeat him. Max has a suspicion of where they might find Talon. Meanwhile Talon is attacking New York in his quest for human flesh and blood. Hundreds of souls are sucked into Talon's eyes as he goes about his killing rampage. All is going well for him when he is stunned to see the disk of immortality flying before his very eyes. He watches is as it spins through the air and lands neatly in Max's hand. With a screech Talon and the eagle attack but Max, Norman, and Virgil run into the lobby of a large building. The eagle momentarily gets itself caught in the doors of the building. Max shouts at Talon to meet them back at the desolate ruins if he ever wants to see his disk again, and with that the trio disappear into a portal. Back at the ruins it is not long before Talon catches up with Max and team, and he immediately launches an attack on Max, but this time Norman is ready and he smashes into Talon with his sword, causing the eagle to drop Talon onto the ground. "The pain! The Pain! " cries Talon, and his crystal eye orbs fly from their sockets, and spin around his head before settling back into the skull. Max picks up a rock from near his feet and approaches talon, who seems to be silent for the moment, and throws the rock into one of the crystal eyes. It smashes open and releases not only a yucky fluid, but also all the thousands of tormented souls who stream into the night sky. The eagle lands back on Talon and immediately Talon wakes up and threatens Max with a long and horrible death. Max is not afraid! He brings the disk of immortality out of his pocket once again and bends it in front of Talon. Talon then changes tactics, and in a gentle voice he promises Max the gift of immortality and the realm of the astral plane if he returns the disk to him. Max looks at the disk and falls silent, considering the possibilities; never growing old, seeing the future, but hey, who wants to be a kid forever. Max tells talon to keep his offer and launches the disk at the hole in the wall leading to the astral plane. With a cry Talon and the eagle fly off after the disk, and disappear back into the astral plane, closing the breach after them. Everything is back to normal.
